How to Rotate PDF Pages on Mac and Save Them

Pages end up sideways when a scanner or phone saves them in the direction they were fed in or photographed. Landscape pages inside a portrait document, such as a wide table or a chart, often come out that way too.

Upside-down pages usually come from a sheet that went into the feeder the wrong way round. Either way, the PDF shows exactly what the scanner saw, and every reader who opens it has to turn their head or the page.

Rotating the view only turns the page on your own screen, while rotating the page writes the new orientation into the PDF so it opens the right way up for everyone.

Some PDF readers only offer the first kind, which is why a file can look fixed on your Mac and still arrive sideways. Preview's Rotate Left and Rotate Right change the pages themselves, and File Acture always writes the rotation into the new file.

Preview rotates pages with Tools > Rotate Left and Tools > Rotate Right, or Command-L and Command-R. Choose View > Thumbnails first and select the pages you want to turn; unselected pages stay as they are.

Preview writes the rotation into the document you opened, so choose File > Duplicate first if you want to keep the original. It works well for one file. For a folder of scans with the same problem, you open, rotate and close each one in turn.

File Acture's Rotate Pages turns every page, or only the pages you list, by 90 degrees left, 90 degrees right or 180 degrees, and saves a rotated copy of each PDF.

Under Rotation, choose Left, 180° or Right. Leave Pages empty to turn every page, or type ranges such as 2-4, 9. The same setting applies to every PDF in the run, and each copy is saved with “-rotated” in its name.

The turn is added to each page's rotation setting, which is how PDFs store orientation. Nothing is redrawn or re-encoded, so images keep their full quality, text stays selectable and searchable, and links keep working. The original file stays unchanged, and nothing leaves your Mac.

To rotate only some pages, list them in Pages as single numbers and ranges, such as 3, 7-9, and every other page stays as it is.

This is the usual fix for a report with a few landscape tables, or a scan where one sheet went in sideways. In Preview, the equivalent is to Command-click the thumbnails of those pages before you rotate. If different PDFs need different pages turned, give each one its own run in File Acture, since the page list applies to every file in a run.

Rotating with File Acture leaves the file size practically unchanged, because only a small setting on each page changes.

The images and text on the page are copied as they are, so a 20 MB scan stays about 20 MB and looks exactly as sharp as before. If the file is too large for an upload, that's a job for Compress PDF rather than rotation.

Rotate first when you're about to do anything else with a scan.

• Before OCR: text recognition works best on upright pages, so rotate before you make a scanned PDF searchable.
• Upside-down pages: choose 180°.
• Turned the wrong way? Rotate the copy again in the other direction. The change is lossless, so nothing degrades.
• Next steps: split the rotated file into parts, or merge it with other PDFs.
• Locked PDFs: if a PDF needs a password to open, unlock it first. PDFs that only restrict printing or copying keep those restrictions after rotating.
