How to Resize Photos for Passport and Visa on Mac
Official document applications require exact millimeter dimensions and 300 DPI resolutions that built-in tools cannot crop automatically without distortion. File Acture's Resize Images provides ready-to-use presets for biometric passports (35×45 mm), US visas (2×2 inches), and ID cards with automatic Crop and Fill framing.

Whether renewing your biometric passport, entering the US Green Card lottery, or submitting an international visa application, official photo guidelines are unforgiving. Standard Mac tools require calculating pixels and manual cropping, which often leads to rejected applications.
Official photo dimension requirements for passport and visa
Different government agencies enforce strict aspect ratios and print sizes:
Submitting an image with the wrong proportions or low resolution causes automated validation systems to fail.
- Biometric Passport (ICAO / EU / UK / Turkey): 35 × 45 mm, equivalent to 413 × 531 pixels at 300 DPI.
- US Visa & Green Card (DV Lottery): 2 × 2 inches (51 × 51 mm), exactly 600 × 600 pixels at 300 DPI.
- ID Card & Driver's License: 24 × 32 mm, equivalent to 283 × 378 pixels at 300 DPI.
Why manual resizing in Preview often distorts photos
In Preview, typing custom dimensions into Tools > Adjust Size can easily stretch or compress facial features unless you calculate the exact pixel ratio beforehand. Furthermore, Preview overwrites your original file directly.
File Acture solves this with intelligent framing: Crop and Fill centers your portrait and crops the margins to match the official ratio perfectly without distorting your face.
How to resize for passport or visa with File Acture
Open File Acture and choose Resize Images from the sidebar. Drag in your portrait photo.
Under Size, choose Preset and select Passport / Biometric (35×45 mm) or US Visa / Green Card (2×2 in). The target dimensions and 300 DPI settings are applied instantly.
Under Framing, Crop and Fill is selected by default for document presets, ensuring clean framing. You can also pick Proportional Fit if you prefer no cropping.
Click Resize. Your compliant photo is saved as a new file with “-resized” added to its name.
Preparing a complete application photo offline
Many official portals also require a plain white background and a file size under 240 KB. You can combine File Acture tools entirely on your Mac:
First, make the background white using Remove Background. Next, apply the passport preset in Resize Images. Finally, if the portal enforces a strict kilobyte ceiling, compress the photo to a target size.
