How to Reduce a Photo to 100 KB, 50 KB or 200 KB
Preview on a Mac and the Photos app on Windows can lower a photo's quality or size, but you have to guess until the file drops under the limit. Exam registrations, job applications, visa and government forms often ask for a photo or a signature scan under 50, 100 or 200 KB. A photo straight from a phone is 20 to 50 times larger, and the form just says “file too large” without saying how to fix it.
What pixel size fits in 50, 100 or 200 KB?
Two things set a JPG’s size: how many pixels it has and how strongly it is compressed. As a rough guide for a normal photo at good quality, about 800 pixels on the long side fits in 50 KB, about 1,200 pixels in 100 KB and about 1,600 pixels in 200 KB.

The built-in ways on a Mac and on Windows
On a Mac, open the photo in Preview, choose File > Export, set Format to JPEG and drag the Quality slider; the sheet shows the file size, so you nudge it until it drops under the limit. Tools > Adjust Size lowers the pixel count first if quality alone isn’t enough.
On Windows 11, the Photos app's Resize image option lowers the pixel size and quality of one photo, and Paint's Resize changes the pixel size. Neither shows the final file size before saving, so you save, check the size in File Explorer and try again.
How to reduce a photo to exactly 100 KB

Tips for small limits
The smaller the limit, the more the starting photo matters.
- Crop first: a passport-style photo only needs the head and shoulders; cropping away the room leaves more of the size for the face.
- Signature scans: a signature on white paper fits in 20–50 KB easily; scan it in grayscale.
- Plain background: a busy background costs size; a white background compresses much better.
- Documents, not photos? If the form wants a PDF, use Compress PDF to 100 KB instead.
Is it safe to compress photos online?
