Adobe Acrobat is the reference PDF app, and for some jobs nothing else comes close. But many people keep an Acrobat plan running for a handful of tasks: fix a typo in a PDF, shrink a scan for an upload portal, make a scanned document searchable, put a few files together.

What you get for free, and what needs Acrobat Pro
Acrobat Reader is free: it opens PDFs, lets you comment, fill in forms and add your signature. Editing the existing text, compressing, OCR, combining files and password protection belong to Adobe's paid plans, Acrobat Standard and Acrobat Pro, sold as a monthly or yearly subscription. Adobe also has free online tools, but they upload your file and limit how much you can do without an account or a plan.

What Preview already does on a Mac
Before paying for anything, look at Preview, which comes with every Mac. It reads PDFs, highlights and annotates, fills in simple forms and adds a signature you draw on the trackpad or photograph with the camera.
