How to Password Protect an Existing ZIP File on Windows
Windows 10 and 11 File Explorer cannot add password protection to existing ZIP files. File Acture lets you drag and drop any existing ZIP file and protect it with either Standard ZipCrypto encryption for native Windows Explorer compatibility or AES-256 for military-grade protection.

You have a ZIP archive on your PC containing private documents, contracts, or tax returns and want to secure it with a password. Windows includes built-in zip extraction, but no tool to lock an existing archive without complicated third-party command line utilities.
Can Windows File Explorer password-protect an existing ZIP?
No. Windows File Explorer allows extracting ZIP archives and compressing folders, but neither feature provides password protection. To add a password using standard Windows tools, you would need complex scripts or external command-line utilities.
Additionally, many third-party tools require you to manually extract all files into an unencrypted folder first, creating a potential security leak on shared or office PCs.
How to protect an existing ZIP with File Acture on Windows
File Acture on Windows makes securing existing archives effortless. Drag any .zip, .7z, or .tar file directly onto the Protect Archive tool.
Type your chosen password and confirm it. In the options inspector, select your desired encryption method: Standard for native compatibility with Windows Explorer and standard extractors, or AES-256 for confidential files.
Select a Compression level: Normal, Maximum, or None (fastest), and click Protect. File Acture processes the files directly in temporary memory and writes the new protected archive to your output folder.
Standard ZipCrypto vs. AES-256: Which should you choose?
File Acture gives you the flexibility to choose the right encryption method for your recipients:
Standard (ZipCrypto): Recommended when sharing files with people who only use native Windows Explorer or default operating system tools without installing third-party software.
AES-256: The modern encryption standard. Recommended for confidential, legal, and financial records. Opens seamlessly in File Acture, 7-Zip, WinZip, and modern archive utilities with the password.
What happens to the original ZIP file?
The original archive is never modified or overwritten. File Acture writes a fresh file ending in “-protected.zip” to your designated output folder.
Once you verify the protected archive opens with your password, you can safely delete the original unencrypted archive.
