How to Convert WebP to JPG on Mac
Open the WebP file in Preview, choose File > Export and set Format to JPEG; for a whole folder, the sips command in Terminal converts every file. File Acture's Convert Images converts a batch in one run, on your Mac, with a quality setting, and can write PNG instead.

You save a picture from a website and it turns out to be a .webp file. Then an upload form, a portal or an older program refuses it and asks for JPG. Here are the free ways built into macOS, and a faster one for a whole folder.
What is a WebP file, and why convert it to JPG?
WebP is an image format Google made for the web. It usually makes smaller files than JPG or PNG and can hold transparency and short animations, so many websites serve their images as WebP and saving one often gives you a .webp file.
Every modern browser shows WebP, but support is patchier elsewhere: some upload forms take only JPG or PNG, and older photo and office programs can't open WebP. JPG opens practically everywhere, which is why it's still the safe format to send.
Can a Mac convert WebP to JPG without extra software?
Yes. macOS opens WebP files in Preview, so a one-off conversion needs nothing else, and the sips command in Terminal can convert a whole folder.
- Preview, one file: open the WebP, choose File > Export (File > Export As… in macOS 27), set Format to JPEG (or PNG) and drag the Quality slider. The WebP stays as it was.
- Preview, several files: open them in one window, select all the thumbnails in the sidebar and use the same File > Export command: it exports every selected image.
- Terminal, one file:
sips -s format jpeg photo.webp --out photo.jpg. Use-s format pngfor PNG, and add-s formatOptions 85to set the JPEG quality. - Terminal, a whole folder: from inside that folder, run
for f in *.webp; do sips -s format jpeg "$f" --out "${f%.webp}.jpg"; done. A file with the same name is replaced without asking.
How to batch convert WebP to JPG with File Acture
For a handful of images, Preview or sips is all you need. With dozens, exporting by hand is slow and loops mean typing commands. File Acture's Convert Images converts a whole batch of WebP files to JPG with one quality setting, on your Mac.
It reads WebP with its own engine and never uploads a file. Choose JPEG under Format and set Quality; 85 is the default. Keep metadata is off by default, so camera details and location are left out, while color profiles are always kept so colors don't shift. Each JPG keeps the original file name, and nothing already in the folder is overwritten.
The same tool also writes PNG, WebP and, where macOS supports them, HEIC and AVIF. Files go to Documents › File Acture › Images unless you choose another folder, and the originals stay as they were.
Should you convert WebP to JPG or PNG?
Choose JPG for photos and PNG for anything with transparency or sharp edges; every method above can write both.
For JPG, the default Quality of 85 is a sensible middle ground. Go up to 90 or more for prints and images you'll edit again, and down to 70 or 75 for pictures that only need to look good on a web page.
- JPG: photos and other pictures with smooth color changes. Files are small and open everywhere, but JPG is lossy and has no transparency.
- PNG: logos, screenshots, text, line art and images with a transparent background. PNG is lossless and keeps transparency, but a photo saved as PNG makes a much larger file.
What should you know before converting WebP files?
Check what happens to transparency, animation and file size first.
- Transparency: JPG can't store it, so File Acture paints transparent areas white.
sipsdid the same on macOS 27, but other tools and older macOS versions can paint them black, so check the result. Choose PNG to keep them. - Animation: File Acture and sips turn an animated WebP into a still JPG made from its first frame.
- File size: a JPG is often larger than the WebP it came from. To fit an upload limit, use Compress Images with a target such as 500 KB.
- Other formats: for PNG files, see how to convert PNG to JPG. iPhone photos are HEIC: convert HEIC to JPG.
- Batches: the free version converts up to 5 images per run, with 3 runs on each Mac; see pricing for Pro.
Why not use an online WebP converter?
Online converters upload your images to someone else's server, a poor fit for private photos and client files. File Acture converts on your Mac, so the files never leave it; the free version needs an internet connection only to count its runs, and Pro works without one.
If the JPG is for a form, it probably has a KB limit too: pixel and KB limits, explained.

Questions
How do I convert WebP to JPG on a Mac for free?
Open the WebP file in Preview, choose File > Export, set Format to JPEG and save. In Terminal, sips -s format jpeg photo.webp --out photo.jpg does the same.
How do I convert many WebP files to JPG at once?
In Preview, select all the thumbnails and use File > Export, or loop sips over the folder. File Acture's Convert Images handles a whole batch with one quality setting; the free version takes up to 5 images per run.
Can I convert WebP to PNG instead of JPG?
Yes. Choose PNG in Preview's Format menu, use -s format png with sips, or set Format to PNG in File Acture. PNG keeps transparent areas, but photos make larger files than JPG.
Is there an offline WebP to JPG converter for Mac?
Yes. Preview and sips are built into macOS, and File Acture converts on your Mac without uploading anything. The free version needs an internet connection only to count its runs; Pro works without one.
What happens to transparent or animated WebP images?
JPG has no transparency or animation. File Acture paints transparent areas white and keeps only the first frame of an animated WebP. Other tools can paint transparent areas black, so check the result, or convert to PNG if you need the transparency.
Does converting WebP to JPG lose quality?
A little: JPG is lossy, so some detail is lost on top of whatever the WebP already lost. At quality 85 or higher the difference is usually hard to spot, but the JPG is often larger than the WebP.
