Your files

Everything you do with File Acture happens on your Mac. Your files, their names and their folder paths are never uploaded, sent to us or shared with anyone.

Originals are never modified. Results are saved as new files in the folder you choose.

Information the app sends

The app connects to our server only for the purposes below, and never includes file names, paths or contents.

License activation (Pro): your license key, a random installation ID created by the app, the platform, the app version and the name of your Mac as shown in System Settings. We use this to confirm your license, apply the device limit and let you deactivate a Mac. The app renews its license about once a week when you're online.

Free runs: to count the 3 free runs on each Mac, the app sends a device key, the installation ID, the platform, the app version, the tool you used and whether the run produced a result. The device key is created on your Mac from its hardware identifier with a one-way function. The identifier itself never leaves your Mac, and our server stores the key only in a further hashed form.

Update checks: the app asks our server for the latest version for its platform. You can turn off automatic checks in Settings › Updates.

Anonymous usage statistics (off by default): if you turn on “Share anonymous usage statistics” in Settings › Privacy, the app sends, at most once a day, the installation ID, the app and macOS versions, your language and region setting, and how many times the app was opened, each tool was used and the Pro window was shown.

Feedback: when you send feedback, we receive your message, the topic you picked, the email address if you add one, and the app and macOS versions.

What we don't collect

We don't collect your files, your location or your contacts, we don't use advertising identifiers, and the app contains no advertising or third-party analytics code.

This website

This website uses no cookies, analytics or tracking scripts, and it loads no fonts or scripts from other companies.

Like any web server, ours processes technical data such as your IP address, the time and the page requested in order to deliver the site and keep it secure. We don't use this data to identify you.

Purchases

Pro licenses will be sold through Polar (polar.sh), which acts as the merchant of record. Polar processes your payment; we receive your email address and order details so we can issue your license key and send it to you. We never see your card details.

Where information is kept and for how long

Our server is hosted by Hetzner Online GmbH in Germany.

License and activation records are kept for as long as the license exists. Free-run records are kept for as long as they are needed to count free runs. Usage statistics are kept as an installation record and daily totals per tool. Feedback is kept until it has been dealt with.

Your choices

You can use File Acture without sharing usage statistics and switch them off at any time. You can deactivate a Mac in Settings › License. To see, correct or delete information we hold about you, email us.

Changes

If the app starts handling information differently, we will update this policy and the date above before the change takes effect.
